MADISONVILLE-Monroe County has come
full circle when it comes to a new jail, but Mayor Tim Yates says the
county isn't trying to delay the inevitable.
The county was seriously looking at
property on New Highway 68 at the edge of Madisonville, but that deal
fell through when the owner wouldn't give them the amount of
frontage the county wanted.
So, the county looked at the property
right next door, but that went south also.
"It was the Smith property," Yates
said, "and it would have worked for what we need, but the owner
wanted more money than what we can pay, so we had to drop that idea."
Now the county is back to looking at
property on New Highway 68 behind Volunteer Federal Bank and near
Kefauver Park on Highway 411 South. They are also looking at other
properties on New Highway 68 and Highway 411, but there is nothing
being negotiated at the moment.
"We're not trying to put this off," Yates said.
