MADISONVILLE-A Vonore man accused in
the shooting death of a Madisonville woman las has been ordered to
undergo a mental evaluation.
James Ray Parker, 31, Highway 411, is
charged with first-degree murder in the Oct. 13 death of Katy
Bookout, 57, New Highway 68.
Parker was in Monroe County General
Sessions Court Tuesday for a preliminary hearing, but Judge Reed
Dixon ordered him to undergo a mental evaluation to see if he's
mentally fit to go through the court system.
Charges were issued after information
led to Parker as a suspect in the Sunday killing. Parker was brought
in and he made a statement to Monroe County Sheriff's Office
Detectives admitting to killing Bookout, according to Detective
In a warrant filed by Detective Tonia
Norwood, Parker confessed to shooting Parker, saying he drove his ATV
to Bookout's home where he broke out a bedroom window and shot her
in the chest. Bookout told officers he drove to the home with the
intention of killing Bookout.
Parker said he returned to his home and
hid the gun in a culvert, where officers later found it. He is
schedule to be back in court Nov. 12.
Authorities have not released a motive
for the fatal killing.
