Monroe County Chamber of Commerce
President and CEO Joe Tolson on Wednesday announced he will retire as
head of the Chamber at the end of this year.
Tolson was officially named the Chamber
president and CEO in the spring of 2011 and had served as the interim
president and CEO for several months before that.
The Chamber Board of Directors has
formed a search committee to find Tolson's replacement. Tolson's
retirement announcement is printed below:
"I plan to retire effective at the end
of this calendar year. I feel that I have reached the age where I
should spend more time concentrating on my family. Both of my
grandsons are teenagers and involved in sports, the fact that they
live in South Carolina makes difficult to spend quality time with
them and to continue work. Myrtie and I are healthy and want to
travel some more.
I have enjoyed the experiences in the
five years working with the Chamber, first as a Board Member and then
as President and CEO. I look forward everyday to the challenge of
recruiting new members, my association with he current members and
Board of Directors. I also enjoyed tremendously planning events.
I will cherish all the memories of
working with each of you, my staff, the Diplomats, and our Chamber
I will continue to do all I can to
help the Chamber and will try to do anything you ask of me. I plan
to become an individual member and take part, all I can, in a limited
Again, I have nothing but fond
memories of my association with the Chamber and each of you.
Everyone connected with the Chamber has been very supportive and
helpful to me.
I thank all Chamber members across the
Monroe County as you have all been very supportive of the Chamber and
of me. I also thank my staff, the board members, and diplomats who
together made my job easier and more pleasant.
I will miss all the interaction and
the opportunity to meet and work with so many wonderful people. But,
I do look forward to spending more time with my family and grandsons.
Again, thanks for the many pleasant
Joe G. Tolson"
