SWEETWATER â€” The Lady Wildcats got the statement-making,
confidence-boosting opening win they needed for the 2013 season, while still showing plenty of room
Sweetwater booted in two goals over the course of little more than a minute
late in the first half and rode the cushion to a 3-2 win Tuesday at Mike Ridley Field over East
Sweetwater's Sydney Smallwood broke a 1-1 tie with under 17 minutes to go in the first
half, and just more than a minute later, Christina Ameen bumped in the assist from Sam Evans for the

The two squads played to a
standstill after Sweetwaterâ€™s flurry until just more than two minutes left in the game, when East
Ridge closed the margin to within a goal.
"I can't complain," said Sweetwater assistant coach
Kip McKeag. "I wish we had done a little bit better in the second half. It looks like they had a
little more intensity. It seems like we got a little lax and were content with the score, and they
got one goal closer to us."
The Lady Pioneers were coming off a 9-4-3 season in 2012 that
ended in their district semifinals, while the Lady Wildcats are looking to improve on last yearâ€™s
"We lost about two or three key players who were leaders, so we had to fill in
those gaps," said East Ridge coach Jeremy McIntyre. "We're still learning our positions. We had to
switch girls around and try different positions out."
Walker Valley 3, Sweetwater
The Lady Wildcats lost their first road game of the season, being outshot 24-9 (17-8 on
Sophomore midfielder Julie Ngo scored the lone goal for Sweetwater off an Ameen assist in
the first half's 33rd minute for a 1-0 lead.
But Class AAA's Walker Valley tied it up less
than a minute later, and 13 minutes after halftime took the lead for good.
appears to be much improved in 2013. After a 3-13 season in 2012, it opened with a 6-0 win at Boyd
Buchanan on Tuesday.
Sweetwater will next play at county rival Sequoyah at 5:30 p.m.
