School safety continues to be at the
forefront for both local school systems.
Schools not only conduct fire and
severe weather drills, but also conduct school intruder drills, an
unfortunate necessity in today's times.
Just last week, a heavily-armed gunman
entered a school in an Atlanta suburb though thankfully no one was
"In light of concerns for school
safety, we will continue to have safety drills," Monroe County
Director of Schools Mike Lowry said. "In the meantime we are also
trying to protect instructional time and maximize the school day to
keep students on task and protect quality teaching time. (Secondary
Supervisor) Mike Wiggins is coordinating these for our school
Like the county system, the city
system is focused on safety.
