SWEETWATER ā Points came at a premium for the Sweetwater Wildcats offense, but not for their visitors.
The Wildcats only scored twice ā one by the first string and one by the second unit ā and gave up several long scores in their first full pads scrimmage of 2013 Friday at King Berrong Field against two power programs.
The Sweetwater first team's lone score came on a screen pass to running back Ashaunde Thaxton, who sprinted past the Gatlinburg-Pittman defense for about 70 yards.
The Wildcats' defense gave up a long play from the outset to Coalfield standout tailback Addison Bible. Sweetwater did manage to force a fumble after to keep the Yellow Jackets from scoring.
Sweetwater's defense wasn't so fortunate other times, giving up a steady touchdown drive on G-Pās first possession.
Later, Coalfield's Zac Wilkins caught a ball that inched over the fingers of a Wildcat defender and took it 80 yards to the house.
G-P also busted off a long touchdown run on Sweetwater's next defensive series.
Interim coach Mike Martin pointed the finger squarely at himself after Sweetwater's struggles.
"I didn't coach very well, to be honest with you," Martin said.
Sweetwater scrimmages again this Friday at Oneida.
"A lot of breakdowns that goes back to me not doing the job I need to do," Martin said. "We'll get those things fixed and see Friday those corrections."
Coalfield is coming off a Class 1A semifinals run and is entering 2013 with state title expectations.
Perennial powerhouse Gatlinburg-Pittman is trying to get back into state contention after a losing record in 2011 and a 6-4 regular season and second-round exit in the Class 3A playoffs in 2012.
