ATHENS - The Sequoyah girls returned to their brand of
basketball in resounding fashion against the same opponent who routed them by 30 a week
ago.
With their 58-39 win over No. 2 seed Meigs on Friday in the District 5-AA tournament
semifinals at McMinn County High School in Athens, the third-seeded Lady Chiefs earned a place in
Tuesday's District 5-AA title game.
"We worked all week to basically just regroup, especially
defensively, and we knew that defensively we were a better basketball team than what we did last
Friday," said Sequoyah coach Eddie Gambrell, whose team will play top-seeded McMinn Central for the
district title at 6 p.m. Tuesday at McMinn County High School.
Savanna Atchley scored the
first six points for the Lady Chiefs, who staked out an 18-6 first-quarter lead before the Lady
Tigers' leading scorer Emileigh Swafford's two quick treys brought her team to within six at the end
of the first eight minutes.
But the Lady Chiefs punched right back in the second quarter,
with Hunter Simpson's steal and assist to Jasee Weese sparking a 9-0 run.
Sequoyah finished
the first half up 33-16 and kept attacking in transition all game. Swafford tried her best to keep
the Lady Tigers in the game with her game-high 28 points, but 39-30 late in the third quarter was as
close as Meigs ever got.
Simpson finished with six steals to go with her 16 points. Atchley
also finished with 16, doing most of her damage in the first half. Kassidi Freeman shut down Meigs
in the paint with five blocks.
