DECATUR - The Sequoyah Chiefs wrapped up regular season district play in 5-AA with a 72-62 win over Meigs County. This game was virtually meaningless as these two were set to tangle anyway at the start of the post season.
In any event, this game was far from ordinary. The Chiefs jumped out to a huge 24-14 lead after one quarter, then carried a 41-27 lead into the half.
At this point in the game, Sequoyah didn’t seem to mind the folks in Decatur had decided to make this game their senior night game, Homecoming as well. Maybe it was the time off between halves, or maybe it was just pure will to not lose on senior night. Personally, I think it was the sequins left over from the Homecoming court. The Tiger’s defense glittered the Chiefs, and outscored them 22-8 in the third quarter. Sequoyah blew a 14 point lead and fought to tie the game up at 45.
The score was 49 all, heading to the final eight minutes.
Deandre Clark netted a basket for the Tigers, giving them a 51-49 advantage, but that was the last the would hold. The Chiefs went on an 11-0 run after that, finally mopping up the Tigers. Andrew Millsaps lead all scorers with 26. Shon Stevens nothced 17 on the night, while Seth Schaffer scored 8 points. Taylor Hawkins added 7. Braden Strickland and Brett King both had 6, and Reuben Abernathy had 2. Sequoyah will travel to face Carter on Tuesday night.
