Monroe Area Council for the Arts (MACA) and the Monroe County Historical Society (MCHS) will present a performance and workshop by Sara Grey and her son, Kieron Means on Monday, March 22 at the Madisonville Presbyterian Church.
The workshop, 5:30-7 p.m., will trace the migration of songs from Scotland and Ireland to North America. The Scots and Ulster Scots who emigrated to America left behind them a homeland rich in the oral tradition of song and ballad singing; an inheritance which they carried with them wherever they went.
Their legacy is apparent to this day in the indigenous music of the Appalachians. The workshop will be followed by a performance at 8 p.m in the sanctuary of the historic Madisonville Presbyterian Church, built in 1897. Sara Grey's voice has been described as both powerful and sweet with a distinctive and lovely tremolo. It is a voice well suited to native American ballads and ballads of Ireland and Scotland.
Sara's son Kieron Means is a singer primarily of traditional songs but also of contemporary songs and a guitar player of great merit. He has a great rapport with an audience and his voice is as smooth as silk, rich and mellow.
Admission to both events is open to the public. However, a donation of $10 is suggested. During the month of March, the Monroe County Historical Society is launching a membership drive and a $10 donation includes membership.
