Qualifying deadline for primaries nears

The deadline for candidates to qualify for the May 4 county general Democrat and Republican primaries is fast approaching. Candidates have until noon on Feb. 18 to submit qualifying petitions with the valid signatures of at least 25 registered voters to qualify for the race.
The winners on May 4 will square off on Aug. 5 in the county general election. In the county general election in August, sheriff, county mayor, County Commission, Board of Education, register of deeds, county trustee, county clerk, circuit court clerk, road superintendent and constable races are on the ballot.
The August race will also serve as the state primary for governor and the House of Representative and state Senate seats up for grabs in November. Candidates for the August state primaries and August county School Board election have until noon, April 1 to qualify
Important dates: May 4: County primaries: The last day to register to vote in the primaries is April 5 and early voting is April 14-29. Aug. 5: County general and state primaries: The last day to register for the county general election is Tuesday, July 6 and early voting is July 16-31.
