The Sequoyah Lady Chiefs' misfortune turned into the Sweetwater Lady Wildcats' gain on Thursday night as Sweetwater took advantage of a prolonged Sequoyah scoring drought to secure a 47-30 win. The Lady Chiefs, who have been prone to scoring droughts all season, trailed 12-11 with 6:08 left in the second quarter.
However, Sequoyah managed just one point over the next 15:39 of the game and the Lady Cats ran off 23 straight points to cruise to the win over their archrivals. Both teams struggled early on the offensive end, but Sweetwater ended those struggles in a big way as Allie Bowden knocked down a 3-pointer for the Lady Cats' initial points. Hillary Dyer sandwiched two field goals around a Paige Hicks free throw to tie the game with 3:21 remaining in the first quarter, but Sweetwater rattled off six unanswered points to take a 10-4 lead at the end of the first quarter.
Bowden opened the second quarter with a field goal to push the Sweetwater advantage to 12-4, but two Charissa Cardin free throws, a Dyer layup, and a 3-pointer by Oceana Richards cut the Lady Chiefs' deficit to just one point with 6:08 remaining in the first half. Those would be the final points the Lady Chiefs could muster, with the exception of a Hayley Simpson free throw midway through the third quarter, until Kassidy Freeman scored with 6:29 remaining in the game.
The Lady Chiefs' scoring drought was only 21 second short of last two full quarters. Sweetwater didn't let the Lady Chiefs' offensive woes go to waste, as the Lady Cats finished the quarter with 10 more points to take a 23-11 lead into halftime.
Consecutive baskets by Katie Thomasson, Bridgette Latham, and Shea Ervin extended the lead to 29-11 before Simpson scored Sequoyah's only point of the third quarter with a free throw. Latham added another bucket and Bowden chipped in two free throws to give Sweetwater a commanding 33-12 lead after three quarters of play.
Down but not out, the Lady Chiefs continued to fight in the final period as Sequoyah scored 18 points in the final 6:29 of the game, six points more than it had scored in the three previous quarters combined.
The Lady Chiefs outscored Sweetwater 18-14 in the final quarter but it was not nearly enough as the Lady Cats held on for their second win of the season. Bowden and Latham led Sweetwater in scoring with 12 points while Thomasson and Sidney Hill each finished with six points.
Ariana Conwell finished with five points while Ervin and Lindsey Jefford scored two points. Hicks and Alex Myers rounded out the scoring with one point each. Richards led Sequoyah with eight points while Dyer chipped in six. Danielle Slack scored five points, Megan McConkey scored four points, and Cardin, Freeman, and Katie Russell each added two points. Simpson finished the game with one point.
